Gone are the days of wearing just one print in an ensemble, mixing prints is no longer the fashion faux pas it was years ago. It actually has made quite the comeback and is being seen every season the runway, whether it’s Dolce and Gabbana rocking leopard and polka dots or you taking matters into your own hands by pairing stripes with floral.

Print mixing is actually quite chic, and isn’t only for the fashionably brave. Even the most conservative dresser can accomplish a simple print mixing, whether opting for a simple black and white look or just mixing up accessories.

Here are a few simple notes to make print mixing part of you style, when mixing bold intricate prints remember to keep one in a neutral and the other bold. Another thought is when mixing print pants pair it with a contrasting top to throw off the potential ‘bozo the clown’ factor. The perfect pairing to start off with is the notoriously easy stripe on stripe pairings, remember one thin and one thick makes for an effortlessly chic combination. And as always remember to play around with what looks good on you and you’re body, and don’t forget to have fun. It’s what style is all about.

Beat The Florida Sun.

Being a native Californian, I was raised in the sun. 

Beach activities were a weekend staple and my hair was blond naturally because of it.

So when it came time to move to Florida, I was stoked to move to the sunshine state.

Little did I know - the sun is way more intense here.

Now that I'm older and wiser sun protection is definitely a priority.

So not only do I wear at least SPF 15 daily, but I'm also obsessed with the latest swim trends.

These one pieces are absolutely adorable and obviously great to block out those extra harmful rays.

Not So Classic Black and White.

Black and white is one of those typical classics that everyone seems to lean towards when they're in a fashion rut, or if you're a creature of habit like me, you bring it out it at least once a week. It's the simplest pairings with bold pops of color, shapes and/or prints that always take black and white to the next level, whether it's a red lip that gives pow to an ensemble or an eye catching polka dot shift. Subtle statements are bound to get the point across, especially in geometric prints.


And With spring in full bloom in Florida, it has us reaching for a little more color for our wardrobe especially when it comes to this season's trends, which also happen to incorporate our beloved black and whites. From throwing on colorful flounce skirts with chic striped tees and a blazer to vested bohemian treasures, it all seems to fit the bill for an easy breezy (stylish) spring carrying our timeless pairing.

A Whole New Meaning to Utility.

I stumbled across this jacket about a year ago at Old Navy, and had no idea what on earth I was going to wear it with, but some how I ended up making it one of my wardrobe staples. Getting more wear out of it and the $13 spent than just about anything in my closet.


Finding new and different ways to wear a simple olive utility jacket turned out to be one of the easiest parts of getting dressed, giving utility a whole new meaning while pairing it with (obvious) selections like jeans and short to more creative pieces like sequined dresses and my personal favorite, girlish frocks. Making even the most dressed up piece, casual yet chic. And after all this time it’s still going strong whether it’s being worn to accentuate my ever growing ‘bump’ or to add a little coverage (and style) on a chilly Florida evening.

Maxi dresses are one of Spring’s most lusted after trends, and luckily being in Florida has its advantages, such as getting the warmer weather before everyone else. Meaning spring sprung early here and we all got to trade in our tights for sandals and flowing maxi dresses in an array of prints and colors such as florals, leopard and stripes.

Whether they’re made of chiffon, jersey or silk, maxi dresses are the ideal no fuss dress requiring little to no work with the ability to be universally flattering with the right accessories. They can be dressed up for a night on the town, and made casual for brunch with your girlfriends. They can even stand in as the perfect beach coverup.

I love playing around with different ways to style the lengthy dresses, from pairing statement necklaces and belts to adding extreme heels and a colorful bag. Adding a knit vest or a utility jacket for a little flare is always a favorite option of mine.

Megan Zietz is a 24 year old fashion blogger/stylist/designer currently living in Sarasota, Florida. Originally from Florida, Megan took off to NYC after high school to study photography and fashion design, while gaining experience in modeling. But, her love of fashion began as a child when she insisted on carrying multiple handbags and designing her own Barbie clothing. She is currently Editor In Chief of The Frugalista Diaries, which was founded last spring and has acquired quite the following targeting fashionista's on a budget who love major trends and designers but don't have a budget to spring for them.

Along with blogging and freelance styling & designing, Megan is a mom of a future fashionisto, who shares his mom's love for shoes, handbags and all things fashion at the ripe age of 2.

Nearing the end of her second pregnancy, Megan has made a special point to reach out to other expecting mom's on her blog, showing them that pregnancy can in fact be fashionable. Not believing in fashion don'ts, Megan feels that everyone has to go through their own number of 'fashion mishaps' to find the best style that represents themselves. Finding herself taking risks by mixing unorthodox prints, colors and fabrics, such as tutu's with utility jackets and denim with ruffles, Megan and her style have been featured in a number of print and internet pieces from Glamour.com and Brink Magazine to MtvStyle.com and Fabsugar.com.

Spring Cleaning.

Spring not only brings the wonderful smell of orange blossoms and 85 degree weather, but also the reminder to clean out those closets!

Time to gather those heavy jackets and wool sweaters and put them in the guest closet. It’s time to break out the light, cute and flowy Spring numbers. Sigh, I love Spring.

Now as you do this, really take a look at things you’re wanting to toss. You might come across a piece that you could totally re-use. Going through my closet I came to the realization that I had two denim jackets. One dark and one light. However, I would only turn to wear the light wash jacket. Never the dark. Instinctively you think, “Good Will” - but hold on a second... it was a perfectly good jacket.

I remembered seeing denim vests in some of my outfit inspiration searches and lookbooks. That’s it! My darling dark denim jacket is now the dark denim vest that I wish I had.

So as you go through your closets and put together a “toss” pile - be a little creative. You might be able to really turn something you thought you would never use, into your now favorite item.

Plus it’s a total perk you DIY.

Jamie was truly born with a love for fashion. Her nails were painted before she could talk and she begged her mom for plastic high heels every time they went to the grocery store. Her experience in the fashion and modeling word didn’t happen until high school where she won a modeling contest and started modeling in San Francisco for over 2 years. Her most favorite gig was being a fit model for Levis Strauss. “It was really cool to see the clothes before they came out. I was the one to really see how new designs would fit and lay on the body and that was a refreshing and new side of the industry,” says Jamie.

After living in Northern California most of her life, her family up-rooted to Orlando, Florida where her mom’s job re-located. Since then she has graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Advertising/PR. She currently works for a blog/web development company based out of Northern California and continues to model every now and then. In her spare time she likes to spend time with her family, husband and dogs. She loves the beach, going out on a boat, shopping and working out. She also blogs – Work Your Closet, is her creative outlet. She demonstrates how to re-work items you already have. It’s truly become a passion for her.
